Restricts air flow more than most. The design has a large covered moulding area significantly reducing the air flow.

The filtering fabric in this filter is good and filters well. However, there's so much cardboard cross hatching and an excessively wide rim that much of the filter is covered up, hindering air flow. This makes your air conditioner have to work extra hard to push the air through, which really hard on your a/c. So I cut out all the cross hatching and that helped some. On the next one I may also trim down the edges to about 3/4". Gonna use them because the filter itself is a good one.

These filters weren't packaged individually so when you open the package all of them are exposed to contamination. It would be nice if each filter was protected individually. Otherwise, these filters worked for my situation quite adequately. I don't have a furnace. I use these filters in my windows to reduce the amount of wildfire smoke that can infiltrate my house. They work very well for this task. I needed to tape the filters together to create a filter large enough for my window opening. In my case, I stacked the filters on so they were 16x32. The filter's cardboard is quite sturdy and holds up to the pressure from my window.

As air filtration MERV ratings go 13 is considered a relatively high level of filtration compared to the two more common levels of filtration for home HAVAC systems. And while it does filter more there is also a tradeoff in airflow and heating/cooling efficiency for your AC system. This level of filtration is rated to filter mid to large sized Pollen, Dust and Mold. I live in a very hot and humid climate where the air conditioning runs a lot and when a filter gets dirty it can cause my air-conditioning to freeze up due to low air flow. When you look at the back of the filter you can see the cross pattern of the cardboard significantly blocks the air flow but it is needed to support the air pressure placed on the filter during operation.I have been very pleased with this filter so far and have not had any problems with it. I rated it four stars for sturdiness because it is just made with a cardboard construction where other reusable filters may have plastic or metal frames but this is been just fine.I have been pleased with these filters and would order them again.
