If you can swing the $50 Canon official version, just do it. This thing "technically" does the job the lens hood needs to do, optically, and secondarily, protecting the end of the lens, but it's so unpleasant to use. Even with the hood aligned as needed to begin screwing it on, it seems to want to "snap" onto the lens ring in a way that I feel is going to strip the paint off the lens with enough on/off cycles. The most annoying part of it is trying to get it to go onto the lens backwards for easy storage - without applying more force than I'm comfortable using, it just doesn't want to do on in that orientation, which is just really annoying.A $10 thing that adds frustration to a hobby you love (or a job you hopefully also love) is just not worth it. Get the official one.**UPDATE/EDIT 8/21**I received the official Canon version of this recently, and I've got to update this review. Although the Canon one has some more premium features, it actually is just as difficult to put on and take off as this one is, including being just as difficult to put on in reverse for storage. In that respect, this lens hood is JUST as good as the Canon one. I updated my review to 5 stars.

Canon or non Canon - they infuriatingly do not always stay on - I am clumsy so need robust hoods on all lenses to with stand knocks - this is one of them.
