The internal firmware has a flawed implementation in various ways. When you place it in TAG mode, you can't send messages actively to the anchor; thus it is impossible to announce yourself to the anchor that you are within the area so the anchor could know what to do next (constantly get distance etc.). The anchor itself have to guess which tag is within the area which is impossible to know unless you let the anchor brute force all of the known tags in your list and spam the RF spectrum constantly. The AES key can easily be extracted by using the AT command, which made the AES function kind of useless in that anybody can clone a tag and join the network maliciously. Why does this function even exist when people can extract the key very easily?Another problem is the power consumption. In TAG mode, it uses more power by constantly blinking the LED which does it make sense at all when you see that in Anchor mode, the LEDs are totally disabled.I've used an NCR18650B 3400mAh battery which is considered massive for a UWB tag and it will only last for less than 48 hours. In short, unless you are producing a small showcase demo project (school demo etc.), I would stay away from this module as it is not scalable and the internal firmware with their AT commands is extremely limited.

I love these modules. I've been developing with them for over 6 months and they are very reliable. For sure, given that the data exchanged between an MCU and the module is clear text over a UART, you can see the data but that's not my concern for the time being and it's not like if the information was displayed anywhere, you need to connect to it in some way and know what you are doing... this is not different than having a modem and exchanging AT commands and response in plain text. The distance measurement is very nice and quite accurate. The nice thing is that the AT commands are limited to like 12 and I'll be honest, I've contacted the company by email for support on a few occasions and I've always had a quick and detailed response. Kudos to them. One user said "When you place it in TAG mode, you can't send messages actively to the anchor; thus it is impossible to announce yourself to the anchor that you are within the area so the anchor could know what to do next (constantly get distance etc.). The anchor itself have to guess which tag is within the area which is impossible to know unless you let the anchor brute force all of the known tags in your list and spam the RF spectrum constantly."This is how the module works, not sure why the user is complaining; The anchor sends a message to the tag, the tag responds and in the anchor response, the distance will be given. Spamming the "RF spectrum" is not a huge deal as the signal is not immensely strong since it sends at maximum 300ft in the 6.8+GHz range.... which I don't think is different then the hundreds of things surrounding us constantly bombarding the air with RF signals (wifi, bluetooth, cell etc). The other comment is "The AES key can easily be extracted by using the AT command, which made the AES function kind of useless in that anybody can clone a tag and join the network maliciously."First off, to clone the tag, you need to have tools like a logic analyzer or some other means of connecting to the device physically (e.g. FTDI cable) and use a serial console and whatnot. The kind of thing that is not for everyone. Not sure how else this person is expecting to configure this. It's no different than every other module that has a UART interface for configuration (e.g. ESP8266 or some embedded modem).Anyhow, it's cheap to purchase and if you use your imagination, you can do cool stuff.
