Recently I had to have a couple of large Ash trees taken down , sadly due to dieback . I was left with a huge amount of timber for the wood burner including about 40 rounds or drums of trunk about 18 inch diameter and 8-10 inches long. Unfortunately my trusty old 5 ton hydraulic log splitter wouldn’t touch them. I considered (but not for long) investing three or four hundred quid on an upgrade to a 12 ton machine but when I discovered it only had a maximum diameter capacity of 8 inch thought what’s the point. I then came across Iron Age (manganese steel actually) technology in the form of the Roughneck wood ‘Grenade’.Assuming that the log would most likely explode I set about the task well prepared, steel toe caps, leather gloves , goggles and just in case a pre booked taxi to A&E.However I needn’t have worried , after driving the grenade into the timber with the club hammer like a giant nail it was then sufficiently secured to then give a few carefully measured whacks with the sledge , the log split open and was then similarly dissected further pizza style into usable pieces. Once broken into smaller pieces you could easily split them further with the ‘grenade’ or machine if you have one.It’s probably best to buy two of these splitters and work them in tandem especially on the more stubborn sections and those containing knots as one splitter could get stuck or jammed in the log. The free splitter could then be used to rescue the one that is stuck. During use you will get more accustomed and developyour own technique . One thing that I discovered was that you do not necessarily have to bang the splitter into the centre of the log as this could lead to jamming and takes more force to break open. Sometimes it’s better to start nearer the edge and into existing shrinkage or crack lines.Either way it’s hard work but did the job well, it’s all done now and the ‘Grenade ‘ is now retired to a shelf in the garage ready for the next time -maybe!

Mit dem Keil lässt sich sehr gut arbeiten, er spaltet die Stämme , ca. 1 m lang. Nur das mit dem vierfach teilen klappt nicht.

Estoy súper contenta. Es una pieza robusta y muy practica. Aguanta bien los mazazos y cumple con su trabajo. El tronco se parte en dos cuando lo golpeas y va muy rápido. Lo a consejo a todos que lo quieran comprar es muy útil y fácil de usar. Yo como mujer lo estoy usando y funciona muy bien.

Keil funktioniert einwandfrei und ist gerade bei Baustämmen mit großem Radius äußerst nützlich.Er hält einiges aus und ist immer wieder in Verwendung.Super!

I split a lot of wood, and this does not work as well as a wedge. It works well for little logs, but just got stuck on big-knotty logs. I am still young and can swing a splitting maul with enough force to split most logs. As I get older and lose strength this could be handy. I say this because it is really, really easy to start in the wood. You can just drop it from a foot above the log and it sticks there waiting to be hit with your sledge or maul butt. It is much, much easier to start than a wedge. It just didn't split the really tough stuff, and the easier logs I don't need the help. (for now)

Ich habe diesen Spaltkeil vor ca. 15 Monaten gekauft. Länger hat er leider nicht gehalten, da die Spitze abbrach. Mit der Spaltleistung war ich allerdings recht zufrieden, er spaltet besser als das "Original" von Leborgne, das ich mir nun als Alternative zugelegt habe. Mit dem Leborgne ist meines Erachtens jedoch der Kraftaufwand wesentlich größer, da dessen Klinge nicht so leicht ins Holz eindringt wie die Spitze des Peddinghaus. Deshalb würde ich beim nächsten Mal diesen Keil wieder nehmen, auch wenn er eine recht geringe Halbwertzeit hat. Dafür ist der Preis unschlagbar. Allerdings sollte man nicht glauben, dass mein einen Holzklotz gleich in 4 Teile spalten könne. Das Holz wird immer nur in 2 Teile gespalten. Das Bild ist ein fake!

Der Spaltkeil wurde bisher in Kiefern-, Fichten-, Buchen-, und Eichenholz verwendet und ich kann mich über die Spaltwirkung in keinster Weise beschweren. Eine Spaltwirkung eines Stammes in vier Teile ist zwar seltenst erreichbar, aber mir reicht es schon, wenn der Keil sich nicht ständig verklemmt und dann ein zweiter oder gar dritter Keil gesetzt werden muß.
