The failure was a corroded lead, in this case, the red one. The pads to which the leads are soldered should be centered in the lead opening. The lead opening provides marginal strain relief. In order to correct this in manufacturing, the amount of insulation trimmed off has to be exact. The red lead needs to be a little longer than the others so it can be routed around the edge of the opening and soldered in place. This is very difficult to do, with a better design, there would be fewer manufacturing defects. The potting material needs to be, when uncured, more viscous so it will flow around the leads which will add some strain relief and better waterproofing.The good news is that it can be fixed if you have a soldering iron, wire strippers, liquid tape (for potting material) and a bit of patience.The last picture shows how I improved the strain relieving.I have had no other problems in the year that I've had it installed. I use Plasto-Joint-Stick to ensure no leaking around threads, much more sure than teflon tape with PVC threads.
