One of the best books I've read in recent memory! Every page is a poem, with language that is breathtaking without being overwrought. You really feel like you're right there with the characters, smelling what they smell, feeling what they feel. The descriptions are beyond engaging, and the storyline is expertly crafted. I was so worried that the ending would let me down but it was pitch perfect. I highly recommend this beautiful book that makes you think about life, love, living in the moment, and what it means to leave your mark on the world (not to mention the old adage, be careful what you wish for!).

That should be studied in contemporary fiction classes in higher education. While exploring the theme of selling your soul to the devil that has been known even before Faust, it is a contemporary version of such a tale. The imagery, from the seven moles on Addie’s face to not only mark her but also suggest the Pleiades along with the wooden ring carved from wood by her father to represent eternity, heightens the tale through such clever literary devices. Addie represents the human desire for freedom that we all feel, whether it be a desire to be free from time constraints or the constraints of others, Addie represents this rebellion in us. I must admit that I started to find the novel pointless and wondered where it was going. Then I turned the page and Henry fell into the story. He represents our human desire to be loved for who we are. The relationship that develops despite one having wanted to escape the expectations of other and the other wanted to be accepted by others and thus fulfilling, through sorcery, the expectations of others, the reader learns that the two can cohabitate. Henry’s arrival makes the novel become a page turner and you want to get to the end to know how it does, though you fear that you already know. Yet keep turning those pages. A timeless read with a timeless character.

"𝑁𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑟 𝑝𝑟𝑎𝑦 𝑡𝑜 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑔𝑜𝑑𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑎𝑛𝑠𝑤𝑒𝑟 𝑎𝑓𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑑𝑎𝑟𝑘."Except, Adeline LaRue, only called Addie by her father and her friend Estele, does exactly that. And the darkness hears her. And answers. Addie makes a deal: She will live forever, but everyone she meets will forget her the moment she walks out the door. Until Henry. Until 300 years later. Until the boy in the bookshop who says "I remember you".~If I would ever call a book perfect, it would be this one. "The Invisible Life by Addie LaRue" by Victoria E. Schwab was clearly one of my most anticipated reads ever because it was loved by so many people. I truly had incredibly high expectations. And unbelievably, those expectations were all met. Addie LaRue is a book about what is important in life, about loneliness, about power, about fear, about hope, about the light on the horizon, about the simple happiness in seeing something new, about the question: "What is a person, if not the marks they leave behind?"~The story itself flows at a rather leisurely pace, but it is not once tiresome. In fact, the book could have had 200 more pages simply talking about Addie's life throughout the centuries and I would have loved it just the same.~And the characters - oh the characters! I have completely fallen in love with the French girl with the seven freckles on her face that look like her personal constellation of stars. Wonderful, curious, fearless, loving Addie! She has taught me how to love life, she has taught me that there is always something new and beautiful to be seen in the world. And in the end when the most important question is answered ("Were the moments of beauty worth the years of pain?" [...] "Always.") I believed her.We also have Henry, the boy who feels too much, but eventually learns to accept that, to accept himself. To hear his yearning, desperate voice between Addie's journey through the centuries is truly heartbreaking but beautiful nonetheless. And then there is Luc, the darkness himself, who is cruel and hateful, but whose green eyes can be warm and loving and kind as well. Can the devil truly love someone?~I have never liked endings that do not give complete closure. But here, with this book, with Addie and Henry and Luc, it is different. It broke my heart, but also patched it up again. It left me wanting more, more, more, but gave me enough at the same time. For the first time, I am completely okay with not knowing how the story goes on because it is Addie's story and I am just lucky that I was allowed to hear so much of it.~But what makes this book so special - more than everything I have said before - is Victoria E. Schwab's style of writing. The poetic, almost lyrical sentences leave a mark. They brand themselves in your heart, they linger in your head and I can still hear an echo of so many unforgettable lines from this book that make me want to open it up again immediately. 'Touching' is too little a word to describe what the writing in this book does to you. So let me just say it in Addie's words: "𝐵𝑜𝑜𝑘𝑠, 𝑠ℎ𝑒 ℎ𝑎𝑠 𝑓𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑑, 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑎 𝑤𝑎𝑦 𝑡𝑜 𝑙𝑖𝑣𝑒 𝑎 𝑡ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑠𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑙𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑠 — 𝑜𝑟 𝑡𝑜 𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑑 𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ 𝑖𝑛 𝑎 𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑦 𝑙𝑜𝑛𝑔 𝑜𝑛𝑒." Please read this book. And allow yourself to be a dreamer.

I enjoyed every minute reading this book it is just that good; this book is in a class of its own.Addie LaRue is born in a tiny hamlet in late 17th century France. She feels imprisoned within the confines of the village, and when her parents try to marry her off, she makes a deal with a dark god, for freedom. It comes at a steep price though. Noone remembers her once she is out of view she is forgotten and she can leave no mark on the world. She wanders through Europe and America for 300 years, drifting through people’s lives, sometimes spending months with one person, instantly being forgotten once out of sight. Meeting them every day ‘for the first time’. Until the life-changing moment, in a small second-hand bookshop, in New York, when a young man remembers her from the day before. The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue is a beautiful and haunting book. Pathos winds through the pages like an old vine. The flow of words is easy but poignant. The narrative flips between Addie’s origin story and 2014. The language is beautiful, the past written in the present tense with peeks into the future. Addie is such a relatable character despite her situation. It was a strange feeling reading about someone who can’t hold onto anything while surrounded by books, and beloved objects. When I neared the end of the book, the tears began to flow as I feared a tragic end whilst desperately hoping for a happy ever after. I’m not going to say which one I got.
