If you're considering this board, keep in mind this uses SPI communication to its own UART chipset and not the UART built into your SBC. This may affect some applications that depend on the on-board UART and can't utilize SPI to an off-board UART. Because of this feature, this board is great for applications that use full-duplex RS485 or need two separate half-duplex RS485 lines. C++ and Python examples can be found on Waveshare's website for implementation. With a bit of scripting, this board works well on the Libre Sweet Potato as well.

This is a HAT consisting of two isolated RS-485 channels - each with appropriate protection circuitry and a switchable termination resistor - connected to an SPI I/O expander. This is an unusual approach that has pros and cons: it keeps the onboard UART free for other uses like a serial console, but it does mean you'll need to do additional work to get this HAT up and running and working.Setup is actually pretty easy. Add this line to /boot/config.txt:dtoverlay=sc16is752-spi1,int_pin=24Once you do, you should have two additional ports ready to go, /dev/ttySC0 and /dev/ttySC1.More details are available by searching for Waveshare's wiki for "2-CH RS485 HAT", and I'd encourage you to view that before ordering. I found the instructions to be clear and comprehensive.

The board is well made and worked well. Software support is difficult as It takes about 3 days turnaround to get a return email to a question. Waveshare should work on a little faster support.
