TV presenter, journalist, author of some of the best music-related books in recent years, and now, add to that, a top music compiler; David Hepworth is a man of many talents. His choices for his Deep 70's could nearly all have been played on or performed live on the OGWT - and it's all brilliant. Under 4 separate titles, each of the 4 discs (I'm referring to the cd version) help contextualise (loosely) styles of 70's music that could also be described as music for grown ups. There is nothing throwaway here, nothing gimmicky or pandering to short-lived pop culture like glam rock or punk, (not that those genres are of lesser quality and importance - far from it). The music here is what serious purchasers of albums would have listened to and it is very eclectic. A few familiar names and songs alongside David Hepworth's personal choice of less familiar songs (to me) is a winning formula. Is there a Deep Cuts volume 2 out there? I'd like to think so. One of the very best compilations of the past few years.

This 4 disk set skims some of the very best album tracks from the 1970s and backs it up with David Hepworth's text justifying each track's inclusion. It comes in a slim hardback book format. At about a fiver per disk it is worth every penny.

It's a compilation so that is immediately going to make it a hit/miss affair for many due to the plethora of ground and styles covered. Some of the cuts aren't that deep but then again many are. I suppose the biggest disappointment for me was that I expected more of a write up for each track/artist from Mr Hepworth because some of them were genuine unknowns to me. On the spread you get a page of album covers and then a page of text and I could have done with less of the former and more of the latter. Some of the write-ups have a couple of lines of text only and others more... hence imperfect. But if you are looking for a compilation that covers some of the back-roads of music that bypasses the well trodden paths you'd do a lot worse than get this.
